Job Description

Department and Program Overview

 HRH is seeking a General Practitioner in Oncology (GPO) for a one-year term position to work within the Division of Hematology and Oncology. You will use your demonstrated leadership skills and clinical excellence to contribute to a dynamic group of six Medical Oncologists and three Hematologists. The GPO in the Cancer Care Program is responsible for delivering comprehensive medical care, diagnosis, treatment planning and ongoing management of patients with cancer and suspected oncological conditions.

 Position Summary

 In addition to demonstrated clinical excellence and outstanding interpersonal skills, you require relevant certification from the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, are a member of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario and have a valid OHIP billing number.

HRH has an expectation that all physicians will apply for an academic appointment in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Your support for medical learners in addition is key to our strategic plan as an academic centre and our participation as a member of TAHSN. In addition to your support of advanced practice nursing learners within the ambulatory setting.

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

The role of the General Practitioner Oncology is crucial in ensuring the effective and compassionate delivery of cancer and palliative care services.  You will be expected to:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and consultations for patients with cancer or suspected oncological issues within our Cancer Care Program
  • Collaborate closely with healthcare professionals, including physicians (oncologists, surgeons and other specialties), nurses, social workers, and other team members to ensure seamless coordination in the delivery of comprehensive oncology and palliative care services
  • Diagnose and develop treatment plans, considering patient history, test results and the stage of cancer
  • Prescribe medications, therapies and supportive care tailored for individual patient needs
  • Communicate effectively with patients, their families, and caregivers, explaining treatment options, prognosis and potential side effects
  • Provide ongoing support, counseling and guidance to patients and their families during the cancer and palliative care journey
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and standards. Documenting treatment plans, progress notes, and other pertinent information in the patient’s electronic health records
