Job Description

Common Sense Oncology Fellowship in Cancer Policy

The Sinclair Cancer Research Institute (SCRI) at Queen’s University invites applications for the Common Sense Oncology Fellowship in Cancer Policy. This one-year Fellowship has an expected start date of July 1, 2025 and will provide hands-on methodologic training in health services research and cancer policy.

Common Sense Oncology is a coalition of oncologists, health care professionals, patient-advocates, policy makers, and researchers working to enable high quality and equitable cancer care by ensuring that cancer systems are focused on outcomes that matter. The goal of the Fellowship is to foster critical thinkers in oncology who can lead future Common Sense Oncology initiatives.

The Fellow will be based at Queen’s University in the Division of Cancer Care and Epidemiology within SCRI, but will work with leaders of the Common Sense Oncology movement from around the world.

Queen’s University is located in Kingston, Canada — a historic medium-sized city on the shores of Lake Ontario — and is internationally regraded for its contributions to cancer care and research, including through the Sinclair Cancer Research Institute and the Canadian Cancer Trials Group. The Division of Cancer Care and Epidemiology is a group of 16 physician-scientists and career scientists with expertise in cancer epidemiology, outcomes research, cancer policy, biostatistics, health economics, and clinical decision-making, as well as medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, palliative care, and oncology nursing. CCE has three research themes: health services research, cancer policy, and global oncology.

Fellowship training will be consistent with the core principles of the Common Sense Oncology movement (www.commonsenseoncology.org). While the emphasis of the program is on the acquisition of research and policy skills, Fellows may have the opportunity for a limited amount of clinical work to enable them to maintain their clinical expertise during the Fellowship. The CSO Fellow will have the opportunity to lead peer-reviewed publications and/or policy papers.

The ideal candidate for this Fellowship will have recently completed (<5 years) or will soon complete training in clinical or medical oncology and have demonstrated interest in principles of Common Sense Oncology, including – but not limited to – clinical trial design, patient-centered outcomes, value of care, health equity, global oncology, and/or shared decision-making.
