Job Description

MEDICAL ONCOLOGIST, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Unity Health Toronto

Unity Health Toronto is inviting applications for an Active Staff position in the Division of Oncology/Hematology at the St. Joseph’s Health Centre site in Toronto. Compensation will be provided through the Provincial Oncology Alternate Funding Plan (POAFP) at a 0.5 full-time equivalent (FTE).

St. Joseph’s Health Centre is a key site within Unity Health Toronto, serving a culturally and economically diverse population of approximately 530,000. The hospital is a 400-bed facility that employs around 2,500 staff and includes 500 credentialed physicians. Recently, the hospital received a $1 billion investment from the Province of Ontario to build a state-of-the-art patient tower. Unity Health Toronto’s mission is to deliver compassionate care and advance healthcare excellence through education, research, and innovation. The Department of Medicine at St. Joseph’s Health Centre includes over 130 physicians across 13 divisions, committed to clinical care, education, and hospital leadership. Department members actively participate in undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education programs at the University of Toronto, frequently earning teaching awards. The Department supports a comprehensive patient care experience, from acute to post-acute care.

The Opportunity: The ideal candidate will have an interest in a community-based general Medical Oncology practice and will join a highly collegial team of three full-time medical oncologists. The role includes regular outpatient oncology clinics, supervision of outpatient chemotherapy, and providing on-call coverage for the oncology consult service. An oncology hospitalist will manage MRP coverage during weekdays and weekends. The inpatient service is supported by an oncology social worker and dietitian, while the outpatient clinic benefits from the support of dedicated pharmacists, oncology nurse practitioner (NP), oncology-focused nursing staff, and an exemplary administrative team.

The successful candidate must possess exceptional clinical skills and professionalism, along with a proven ability to collaborate effectively within a team. There are ample opportunities for involvement in quality improvement, medical education and clinical trials, supported by an oncology clinical trials nurse. The hospital is a Cancer Care Ontario-designated cancer surgery centre for hepato-pancreatic-biliary (HPB) and thoracic cancers, as well as a designated site for the Ontario Breast Screening Program. Regular multidisciplinary cancer conferences are held jointly with St. Michael’s Hospital and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

Applicants must be proficient in English and eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto at the rank of Lecturer or higher. Certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario are required. Candidates must also have Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) coverage or an equivalent in good standing. Applications will be accepted until April 1, 2025.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a description of previous academic experience and the names of three references to:
